# ETL: MD5

> Calculate the MD5 message digest hash of a string value. Use MD5 for checksums, data deduplication, and fingerprinting in ETL data pipelines.

## Description

Calculates the MD5 hash of a string

## Syntax

`MD5(string_expression)`

## Examples

`MD5('hello world')` returns 5eb63bbbe01eeed093cb22bb8f5acdc3

## Return value datatype

String

## Impact of null value

If input is null, returns null.
