# ETL: RegionNameFromIP

> Look up and return the region, state, or province name for an IPv4 address. Use REGIONNAMEFROMIP for geographic segmentation in ETL pipelines.

## Description

Extracts the region, state (e.g. USA, Germany) or province (Canada) from a given IPv4 string (dot-decimal notation).

## Syntax

`RegionNameFromIP(ipaddress)`

## Examples

`RegionNameFromIP('69.59.196.211')` returns 'Virginia'.

## Notes

The function uses GeoLite2 data created by MaxMind, available from [http://www.maxmind.com](https://www.maxmind.com/en/home)

## Impact of null value

If input is null, returns null.
