# ETL: TRIM

> Remove leading and trailing whitespace characters from a string field value. Use TRIM for cleaning and normalizing imported text data in ETL jobs.

## Description

Removes leading and trailing spaces from a string field.

## Syntax

`TRIM(string_expression)`

## Examples

`TRIM('  John Smith       ') `returns 'John Smith'

## Return value datatype

String

## Impact of null value

If input is null, returns null.
